Collecting Data

In order to best teach my students, I am constantly collecting data from my students before, during and after lessons.

Before lessons, I will sometimes administer pre-assessments, primarily when students have learned crucial information in past grades that will act as building blocks for future lessons.  This allows me to reflect on what my students already know in order to form future instruction.

During lessons, I assess students through informal observation.  Observations are done primarily during group-work, and the observations help me identify students who may need more support and students who may need challenge work.  Once I have identified students who may need more support, I can work along side those students to decide what needs to be supported for this student to meet the learning objective.

After lessons, I always administer an exit ticket.  I explain to my students that exit tickets are opportunities for them to show me what they have learned throughout the lesson.  On the back side of every exit ticket, students are asked to use the lesson objective and self-assess on their achievement of the lesson objective (See photos below).  Exit tickets help me identify student who may need targeted instruction on a certain skill, or reteaching of the lesson the next day.  Exit tickets are also used to help support students the next day by having student correct their own work and fix their mistakes.
